Controlling when your popup appears (pixel triggers)
Set page targeting, delays, exit intent, and frequency for your popups on the Pixel Triggers page in Reach — and troubleshoot popups that won't show.
Popup display rules — page targeting, delay, exit intent, and frequency — live on the Pixel Triggers page in Reach, not in the form editor. If you're looking for these settings in the editor, that's why you can't find them: you design the popup in the editor, and you control when it appears in Triggers. These settings moved to Pixel Triggers recently, so older screenshots and muscle memory may point you to the wrong place.
Why display rules live in Triggers
The Zalify pixel is the code on your site that decides, on every page view, whether to show a popup. Display rules are pixel behavior, not popup design — so they sit with the pixel's other on-site event triggers, all in one place. The editor in Z1 Canvas stays focused on what the popup looks like; the Pixel Triggers page owns when visitors see it.
If you haven't installed the pixel yet, do that first — without it, popups can't display at all. See Zalify pixel and Reach.
This article covers triggers as they apply to popups. For the full Triggers page — everything triggers can fire, not just popups — see Triggers.
Set up display rules
- In Reach, open the Pixel Triggers page.
- Find the trigger for your popup, or create one and select the popup it should display.
- Configure the display rules described below.
- Save. The pixel picks up the new rules on your site.
The display rules
Page targeting
Choose which pages of your site the popup can appear on — for example, only product pages, or everywhere except checkout. Use page targeting to match the popup's message to the visitor's context.
Delay
Show the popup only after the visitor has been on the page for a set amount of time. A short delay filters out visitors who bounce immediately and feels less abrupt than an instant popup.
Exit intent
Show the popup when the visitor is about to leave the page. Exit intent works well for last-chance offers — a discount or a newsletter signup — because it doesn't interrupt visitors while they're browsing.
Frequency
Control how often the same visitor sees the popup — for example, whether it reappears after being dismissed, and how long to wait before showing it again. Sensible frequency rules keep a popup effective without wearing out returning visitors.
Combining rules
Rules on a trigger work together: a popup with page targeting, a delay, and a frequency cap appears only on matching pages, only after the delay, and only as often as the frequency allows. Start simple — one or two rules — and tighten from there based on results.
Troubleshooting: my popup isn't showing
Work through these in order:
- Is the popup published? Display rules can't show an unpublished popup. See Creating a form or popup.
- Is the pixel installed and running on the page? The pixel does the displaying. See Zalify pixel and Reach.
- Do the page-targeting rules match the URL you're testing? Check the exact URL against the trigger's rules.
- Have you already seen it? Frequency rules apply to you too. Test in a private browsing window to reset your visitor state.
- Waiting on a delay or exit intent? Make sure you've stayed past the delay, or moved to leave the page for exit intent.
What this page doesn't control
Content, fields, styling, and pages of the popup are all edited in Z1 Canvas → Popups & Forms — see Creating a form or popup. Which list submissions land in is a form setting, not a trigger setting — see Connecting a form to a list.
